Soccer

My family loves soccer. They watch the Mexican League and the American MLS. I live in LA and we don't have a football team, but we do have the LA Galaxy.

I remember liking and playing soccer as a young kid, but I also played baseball and soon football took over my sporting interests. The Showtime Lakers of the late 80's also were a big draw so soccer took a back seat.

I found myself following the last World Cup and a bit of nostalgia took over. I remembered how much I would enjoy watching with my dad and brothers. They all still follow soccer, but I was the only one who had no clue what was going on in either the Mexican League or MLS. So this year, I decided I'm going to watch soccer and attend a few Galaxy games. Here are my teams:

LA Galaxy and the Mexico City based U.N.A.M. Pumas will be my teams. I always liked the Pumas because I thought their uniforms were cool. That's also why I used to like the LA Raiders... I hate the Raiders now and rejoice every time they loose. Same for the Rams since they also bailed on my beloved Los Angeles.

The Pumas are the team from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, in Mexico City. I'll root for them since they do represent a University. I'm born and raised in Los Angeles so I always root for LA teams. That made choosing the Galaxy a shoe in.

There's also another reason why I'm taking an interest in soccer again and that is because I will soon be a father. I think soccer is a fun sport and promotes health. I remember playing and wanting to be a goalie because they don't run as much. However, when I played as a striker near the center of the field, I adjusted to all the running. 90 minutes would fly and I didn't remember how much I hated running, but how much I enjoyed playing.

So, soccer is back in my life.
